A traditional San Francisco woodshop.

Wood Thumb is the vision of two brothers who set out to build a creative community in San Francisco that embodies craftsmanship and sustainability.

We started the woodshop in 2011 making small batches of wood products and selling them to thousands of stores around the country - most notably the wood tie! Now we help thousands of students and hundreds of teams get inspired in the woodshop through woodworking classes and team offsites.

The Wood Tie Era

The wood tie made a splash and helped to spruce up people’s wardrobe across the country (and around the world). It even had it’s shining moment in the spotlight with several appearances on late-night shows, in popular magazines, and in some of the biggest stores in the country.

The products were successful, but after a while, we felt as though there was something missing. We thought long and hard about the purpose of Wood Thumb and realized our goal was to get as many people passionate about woodworking as possible. That’s when we turned our attention to offering woodworking classes.

The Workshop Era

Anyone and everyone should experience the satisfaction of woodworking. Over the last 5 years, we’ve turned our focus to offering woodworking classes to the community. We’ve had thousands of students join one of our public woodworking workshops - these are open to all, no matter your woodworking background (although we do have some advanced classes).

As a woodshop in the heart of San Francisco, it was important to us to bring the creative process to the startups and tech companies around our shop. We offered our first workshop to the Airbnb team, and have since welcomed hundreds of teams including many regulars such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Medium, Lyft, Pinterest, and Instagram.
